La Laguna per principianti - Useful Terms

This section is permanently under construction (as blogs usually are ..), I invite you to visit this page at regular intervals as I am continuously updating it.
For all of you that have not yet been to Venice, or that would like to deepen your knowledge about typical expressions referring to Venetian urban layout, in this article, which I intend to develop beyond a mere glossary of those terms I use in this Blog. Actually, doing research into these terms referring to Venice and the lagoon has been part of my thesis at university. The terms are usually expressions in Venexian, the old language that was spoken at the times of the Repubblica Serenissima, and that is still spoken here today !! Also look at the nizioleti (street signs all over Venice), and you'll discover that 99% of street names are still given in Venexian !!
The nizioleto referring to our parocchia (parish), San Zaccaria is the parish church. These "signs" are not attached to the facades of the houses, but they are directly PAINTED upon !!
Let us start with the Venetian terms referring the lagoon environment, to get an understanding of the lagoon as it is here that you will be arriving, before you actually set foot on Venice. Then I will describe our expressions referring to the town's urban layout. All these terms are the framework where the GARDENS in Venice are placed .. And this is the purpose of this section of the blog - creating awareness where the gardens in Venice are located, and giving you some fundamental terms you need to understand if you would like to know more about gardens here but also about the environment and urban settings.
